Annual Tree Walk on CU-Boulder Campus

Test Your Tree I.Q.

What type of tree species exists on the CU campus only as male specimens?

A. Catalpa

B.  Gingko

C.  Colorado Blue Spruce

Join the always entertaining and enlightening Alan Nelson, CU grounds supervisor, on the campus Tree Walk to find the answer to this and other questions about the campus arboretum and tree planting in Boulder. As Senior Grounds Specialist, Nelson has been conducting this popular tour for more than 20 years. Each year the Tree Walk varies and Alan always manages to surprise and delight audiences with new information and knowledge. This delightful annual event takes participants through the campus to learn about over 45 different types of trees. Some of the trees, including the majestic 100-year old cottonwood outside Old Main, are native to this region, while others were imported from the east coast, the southern U.S., Europe and Asia, and are rarely seen in Colorado except on CU grounds.

The tour will depart from the south side of the University Museum (Henderson Building) at 5:00 and will conclude with refreshments and photos of the historic campus at the CU Heritage Center, third floor, Old Main.

Old Main in Spring

Following the Tree Walk, participants are invited to a reception at the CU Heritage Center, the University’s history museum on the third floor of Old Main. Alan will be present to answer any additional questions.
