Few people realized that William (Bill) Toomey, “the world’s greatest athlete,” achieved success while competing with a right hand which had been 75 percent paralyzed since childhood. Toomey broke the world record for the decathlon in 1969. One year earlier he won the Olympic decathlon gold medal in Mexico City, establishing new records.
