Track & Field and Cross Country

Varsity competition in track & field and cross country began in the early University years. The first track was constructed in 1901. Frank Potts, track coach for over four decades (1927-1968), led the “harriers” to important victories. CU’s first Olympic athlete, David Bolen, competed on the CU team in the 1940s. Other track stars include: Gil Cruter, Gordon Allott, Carroll Hardy, Adam Goucher and Jorge Torres. The women’s track and cross country (2000 NCAA national champions) teams have included: Olympian Mary Decker and Kara Grgas-Wheeler, who won the 2000 NCAA individual national cross country championship.
